How To Beat Heart Disease
How To Beat Heart Disease Heart disease is responsible for more deaths in the United States than any other cause. While some folks are at greater risk due to genetics, everybody can lower their risk by committing to a healthy lifestyle. By eliminating the bad and increasing the good aspects of our daily routine we can greatly reduce our heart disease risk. A big factor in America is diet. Our fast-paced, hectic lives find us eating things we know contribute to the problem. First it was the fast food burger for lunch. Then came the fast food dinner when we worked late and didn't take the time to cook a healthy meal. Now fast food breakfast is rapidly becoming the norm. One chain offers a hamburger that weighs in at 1,410 calories. Of that total, 965 calories result from 107 grams of total fat. That's more fat than the average adult should consume for an entire day. Think you can get off easy with chicken? Depending on how it's prepared, a chicken sandwich can easily exceed 500 calories. Make it a combo and you can hear your arteries hardening from the saturated fat and sodium. A diet high in saturated fats tends to increase total cholesterol which, in turn, leads to deposits building up in the arteries. Left untreated, a heart attack is the likely result. Most health care professionals recommend a total cholesterol level of 200 mg/dL. High blood pressure is another factor. It is a leading cause of stroke, the number 3 killer of Americans. An average normal blood pressure for an adult is generally 120/80 mmHg. Please note that the cholesterol and blood pressure numbers are accepted averages and only your personal physician can determine what numbers are right for you. Statins have become the drug of choice for reducing cholesterol levels. They are very effective. They are also expensive and not without side effects. In some studies, statins have been linked to liver disease. A much better method for reducing cholesterol is to move toward a more healthy diet. General guidelines for adults include: Less than 7% of the day's total calories from saturated fats Only 25-35 percent of the day’s total calories from fats Limit sodium intake to 2400 milligrams a day Dietitians and physicians will also tell you that increasing your intake of fruits and vegetables will be good for you, too. This will bolster your metabolism and increase the soluble fiber in your system. That helps to keep your internal engine humming. For those who spend each working day behind a desk, increased physical activity will probably be the next recommendation of your physician. Sedentary lifestyles encourage our bodies to store rather than burn fat. Moderate daily activity helps to lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol and maintain a lower weight, all essential in reducing your risk of heart disease. Death rates are 20% lower in heart attack victims involved in a formal exercise program than those who are not. As mentioned above, statins are hugely successful in reducing cholesterol and thereby reducing your risk of heart disease. But you may have another option before reaching that step. There are a number of effective natural products that may work for you. Some products such as Poli-Cholest contain an all-natural dietary supplement that is believed to support and enhance cholesterol metabolism. Be certain to check with you physician before trying any alternative therapies. If you are interested in other natural health care products you can find a full line at cardiohelpdesk.com. |
